On August 11, 2026, the European Union removed its target to launch ETIAS in the final quarter of 2026, pushing UAE travellers waiting for the Schengen travel permit into 2027. The ETIAS launch is now expected in 2027. The date slipped. Not this year.
The official ETIAS portal is blunt. It says the system is "currently not in operation" and that a specific start date will be announced "several months before it goes live." For visa-exempt UAE citizens, no pre-trip authorization or fee is required yet. The line stays open. The application does not.

Europe's new Entry/Exit System, or Entry/Exit System (EES), became operational on April 10, 2026. It replaces manual passport stamps with biometric registration. First-time non-EU visitors must provide fingerprints and facial scans. The border changed first. ETIAS did not.
Those checks have already slowed arrivals at major European airports. Waits of 1 to 5 hours have been reported at Paris (CDG) and Amsterdam (Schiphol). The queues are visible. They are not theoretical. A long transfer can disappear there.
The harder squeeze in the UAE still hits residents who need visas. Appointment waits at VFS Global or BLS International have reached 3 to 4 months in some cases, and many travelers report no available slots for France, Germany and Italy through the end of summer 2026. The calendar is tight. Very tight.
Visa appointments are the harder bottleneck
Two steps remain for many trips. Visa-exempt citizens avoid the application stage, but they still face the border check in Europe. Residents who need a visa meet the delay earlier, before a flight is even booked. Different lines. Same slowdown.
The appointment crunch has also changed how people plan. Popular destinations are the first to fill, and the wait can stretch for months before any biometric visit is set. That leaves less room for last-minute travel. Much less.
Paperwork now reaches back farther
Many Schengen consulates in the UAE now require 6 months of bank statements, up from 3 months, to prove financial stability. The document pile is larger. So is the lead time. Travelers need more recent records, and they need them sooner.
That extra paper matters when the calendar is already blocked. A traveler may find a slot, but still need time to collect the statements the consulate now wants. The process adds another layer before departure. Another delay.
The portal still points to a later start
Still not in operation. The official ETIAS page says a start date will be announced several months before the system goes live, and the rollout is now expected in 2027. Until that notice appears, the permit remains off the schedule. The page says so plainly.
