Malawi kept visa-free access, or simplified entry, for travellers from 160 countries, Pasqually Zulu said on Aug. 11, 2026, as the country held onto a three-tier entry system. Some still need advance visas.
Zulu said the split turns on reciprocity and security. He put 47 countries in the strictest lane.

"We have retained visa-free or simplified entry arrangements for travellers from 160 countries. The Category One classification [of 47 countries] is based on reciprocity and security considerations. We need to vet them, which is why we require a visa in advance."
The vetting comes first.
The rest of the system splits into two easier lanes. Some visitors need no visa. Others can arrive and pay. Kamuzu handles the arrival line.
The policy traces back to a February 2024 rollout that the tourism ministry sold as an economic bet. Vera Kamtukule framed it bluntly.
"This monumental decision isn't just about visas; it's about unleashing the untapped potential of our beloved Malawi and inviting the world to experience its wonders first-hand."
Money was the point.
The United States has tightened its own rules for Malawians at the same time. On Jan. 1, 2026, the embassy said:
"In line with Presidential Proclamation 10998, as of January 1, 2026, the United States is partially suspending visa issuance for nationals of Malawi, with limited exceptions. Nationals of Malawi may still submit visa applications. but they may be ineligible for visa issuance or admission."
Limited exceptions remain.
Malawi splits entry three ways

The 160-country total is not one uniform waiver. Visa-exempt travellers skip the visa desk altogether. Category Two visitors still move through the port of entry. Category One travelers must clear approval before boarding. Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe handles the arrival lane. Some travelers hand over $50 there.
The State Department started a separate B1/B2 bond pilot on Aug. 20, 2025. It said Malawians found otherwise eligible must post a bond of up to $15,000, based on overstay rates in the Department of Homeland Security's Entry/Exit Overstay Report. Since Aug. 1, 2026, routine visa services at the U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe have stopped, and applicants must travel to Nairobi, Kenya. The trip now starts elsewhere.

The regulations published on Jan. 3, 2026, tie those fees to reciprocity. A transit visa lasts 7 days.
At Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, eligible visitors can still get visas on arrival for $50, provided they carry hotel reservations and newer, post-2017 U.S. dollar bills. The airport still processes those arrivals.
