Immigration Department Halts 10-Plus-Year Passports, Offers Free Replacements

Malaysia’s Immigration Department capped passport validity at 10 years on Wednesday and said it will issue free replacements for anyone holding the older books. The move follows complaints from travelers who hit airline check-in problems overseas.

Malaysian Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the department acted to end the confusion around the extra six months some renewals once carried. He said:

"The decision to standardise the maximum validity period at 10 years was aimed at avoiding confusion over the additional six-month passport validity requirement, which was interpreted differently by some airlines."

The department had previously let early renewals keep unused time from the old passport. That could push a book to 10 years and 6 months. The new rule stops that practice and sets the Malaysian International Passport, or PMA, at exactly 10 years.

The change grew out of airline counters, not border posts. Some Malaysians were denied boarding or stuck in long delays because check-in systems treated the longer validity as a problem. Zakaria put it bluntly:

"It is not the country, it is the airlines. The immigration systems of any country do not have an issue with the validity period because they will simply enter the passport's validity period. but the airlines have a problem."

The International Civil Aviation Organisation says there is no international ban on passports that last more than a decade. Still, airline software often flags them anyway. Small error, big mess.

The department said anyone whose current passport was issued with a validity period above 10 years can get a replacement without paying. Those holders will also get priority at immigration offices, and the department is sending a notification letter to international airlines for Malaysians overseas.

Why airline software turned a passport date into a travel problem

The problem sits in airline computer systems. They often hard-code passport checks in a way that does not match the rules used by immigration systems. When a book shows validity beyond a decade, the system can flag it, reject it, or slow the traveler down at check-in.

That mismatch explains the disruption. It does not change the passport itself.

The move also sets Malaysia apart from the current U.S. passport timetable. Adult passports there remain valid for 10 years, child passports for 5 years, and renewals do not carry forward leftover months from the old book. The new period starts from the date the replacement book is issued.

The department said it will keep working through the airline notification process for people already abroad. That letter is meant to help them at the counter.
