Malaysia's Immigration Department and the Expatriate Services Division added photo verification to certain Employment Pass and Dependant Pass filings in August 2026, putting another gate in front of case submissions. Two launch dates are in play. Both are already active.
The check reaches EP and DP cases moving through Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation and ESD channels, including eVISA and MyVISA steps. Applicants can screen a passport image before submission, then employers can review it again before filing. Background references also place Professional Visit Pass and Residence Pass-Talent in the same VDR chain. The file stays upstream.

The point is to catch bad images before they hit the visa stage. That avoids late holds when a photo misses the mark. The system pushes the problem earlier, where it can be fixed.
If automation rejects a picture, the case goes to the VDR Issuing Office. The department also points users to an official checker. Use it early.
The validator also treats VDR and VTR photos differently. The background rule changes with the application type, and that detail is now built into the guidance. It is strict.

The picture has to fit a narrow template
The instructions read like a gate, not a suggestion. They cover the size of the image, the upload weight, the background, and the face itself. One missed item can stop a filing.
- VDR applications accept a plain white or blue background.
- VTR applications accept a plain white background.
- The photo size is 35mm x 50mm.
- The upload cap is 25kb.
- The face must be full and front-facing.
- Eyes stay open, with a neutral expression.
- The mouth stays closed.
- Shoulders must be visible.
- No spectacles and no shadows on the face.
- Head covering is allowed only for religious reasons, and the face must remain fully visible.
ESD now tells users to upload the photo in ESD Online and check it with the eVisa Malaysia photo check tool before submission. Applicants can check first, and employers can verify again before filing. That keeps the image review inside the filing flow.
MDEC's 21 August 2026 update told employers to verify photos before they submit eVISA applications. The department also directed users to the checker.
