The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission lists a mobile-unit REAL ID visit in Mount Laurel for January 27–31. The township announcement does not give a year.

The visit is scheduled at the Mount Laurel Community Center, 100 Mount Laurel Road. Residents book through the state, not the municipality.

The Mobile NJMVC Van listing directs residents to reserve REAL ID Appointments through the state scheduler. The mobile unit serves as an in-person option for residents seeking the federal-compliant credential.

Residents need a state-booked appointment for a first REAL ID

The first REAL ID must be obtained in person with an appointment. A walk-in visit will not work. The MVC says a Standard New Jersey license remains valid for driving and general identification, but it no longer satisfies federal identification requirements for domestic air travel or entry to certain federal facilities. That change took effect May 7, 2025; a REAL ID, valid U.S. passport or another federally approved ID meets the requirement.

The MVC describes the document formula as “2 + 1 + 6”: two proofs of New Jersey home address, one valid Social Security number and identity documents worth six REAL ID points. REAL ID uses different point values from the Standard credential’s Six Points of ID system, so applicants should check the state’s REAL ID information before the appointment.

A Standard New Jersey license or ID costs $24. A REAL ID costs $35. The federal-compliant credential is optional for people who use a passport or other accepted identification instead.

Applicants must bring matching identity papers and current address proof

Applicants should assemble their documents before the visit. Legal Services of New Jersey says the primary identity document must show the applicant’s full legal name, including first, middle and last names and any suffix. Names on secondary documents must match it exactly.

Bring current originals or certified copies in English, with required state or municipal seals. Identity papers cannot be laminated. The legal services group recommends bringing more than six points’ worth of identity documents in case one is rejected because it is expired, incomplete or inconsistent with another paper.

Address evidence can include a valid New Jersey driver license or non-driver ID, or an MVC renewal form showing a residential address. Other options include a utility or credit card bill issued within the past year, a recent bank or credit-union account statement, or an unexpired lease or rental agreement.

Applicants can also use a USPS Change of Address form; a tax bill, statement or receipt; recent correspondence from an IRS, state or local tax office; or first-class mail from a government agency issued within the past year. Applicants under 18 may use a parent or guardian’s address certification on the MR-24 Parent Guardian Consent Form.

The mobile unit handles several transactions but gives no tests

Appointments at mobile units can cover REAL ID, registration renewal, an initial permit, a non-driver ID, and a duplicate or replacement title or registration. The unit does not administer tests.

Some services do not require reservations. Residents can surrender license plates or obtain handicapped, Veterans or Purple Heart placards as walk-up services. Mobile units are wheelchair accessible.

Weather or other unforeseen circumstances can lead the MVC to cancel a mobile event. The agency can also cancel at its discretion.

Renewal and emergency options offer other routes to REAL ID

People who do not need the credential immediately can wait until renewal. The MVC makes renewal appointments available within three months of expiration, and applicants can request REAL ID at any renewal appointment. After receiving a REAL ID, customers can generally renew it online or by mail.

The agency says about 80% of its transactions are available online. Those include license and ID renewals, registration renewals, address changes, replacement licenses or registrations, probationary-license upgrades, driver-history abstracts and restoration-fee payments.

The MVC also offers expedited REAL ID appointments for qualifying life-or-death emergencies and urgent interstate travel within 30 days. Appointments are limited, and expedited shipping adds $80. A Marlboro municipal letter pointed residents to the MVC’s emergency information for travel within 14 days.

Federal air-travel rules drove earlier appointment expansions

The REAL ID program sets federal standards for state-issued driver licenses and non-driver identification cards, with the aim of helping prevent fraudulent identification. New Jersey expanded appointment availability before the federal deadline.

The MVC started “REAL ID Thursdays” on Thursday, March 20 (2025), adding nearly 4,500 appointments each Thursday at licensing centers statewide. Saturday mobile-unit events began April 5, and bookings for the Thursday appointments opened Friday morning, March 14.

Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd said the agency had added and reassigned appointments as demand grew:

“Over the last few months, we've seen a dramatic increase in demand for REAL ID from our customers, and we've repeatedly added and reallocated appointments to better meet that demand”

“If you have a passport or another federally accepted ID, you may continue to use it to meet federal REAL ID requirements, or until you are able to obtain a REAL ID driver license or ID at a convenient time”

State booking notices have used different release times

The MVC controls the appointment portal. Marlboro Mayor Jonathan Hornik’s July 13, 2026 letter said reservations for a local mobile-unit event opened July 14 at 11:00am, and warned that slots were limited and filled quickly. The letter said the township could not schedule appointments itself.

Other notices set different release times. Marlboro’s December 12, 2025 update said bookings for its January 5–9, 2026 mobile-unit week opened December 15 at approximately 11am. Monmouth Resource Net says mobile-unit and agency appointments statewide open every Tuesday between 3–4pm.

The MVC has also expanded REAL ID appointments at Hazlet, Turnersville and Wallington. In Monmouth County, licensing centers offering appointments include Eatontown at 109 Route 36, Freehold at 811 Okerson Road, and Hazlet at 1374 Route 36, Airport Plaza Mall.

Standard MVC appointment slots are released six nights a week and can be found early in the morning. Licensing centers open Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Walk-ins are accepted for name changes, gender marker changes, probationary licenses after a road test, disability placards and plate returns.
