- India says OCI cardholders may travel after a new passport is issued, even while the online update is pending.
- Holders must submit passport updates within 90 days of the new passport’s issue date.
- Travelers should carry their new passport, OCI booklet, old passport if available, and printed update acknowledgement.
India has clarified that OCI cardholders can travel to or from the country after receiving a new passport, even if the online passport updation is still pending. They do not have to wait.
A September 2026 clarification attributed to the Consulate General of India, Atlanta, says: “There is no restriction on an OCI cardholder travelling to or from India from the date the new passport is issued until the update is finally acknowledged.”

The clarification addresses a specific gap: the time between a passport’s issue and the system’s completion of the associated update. It permits travel during that interval. It does not cancel the requirement to update passport details.
The Bureau of Immigration says holders must update those details whenever a new passport is issued, irrespective of age. The change is made online, rather than through a new OCI application solely because the passport number changed.
The travel permission does not extend the update deadline
The Bureau advises submitting the passport update within 90 days of the new passport’s issue. That deadline remains in place even when a trip falls inside the period before the online record receives its final acknowledgement.
The distinction is straightforward. Travel may proceed while an update is pending, but the pending status does not complete the update. Holders should submit the change promptly and keep a record of the application.
Public guidance says a US$25 late penalty may apply if the passport details are updated after 90 days. The Bureau has also warned that failing to meet applicable requirements could lead to penalties, travel restrictions or other legal action under existing rules.
The current guidance applies the update requirement to every new passport, regardless of age. That is broader than earlier guidance that distinguished between passport updates for people below age 20, after age 50, and reissue requirements after age 20.
Carry documents linking the new passport to the OCI record
The clarification permits travel before the online update is complete, but travelers should carry documents that connect the new passport with their existing OCI record. A printed status page can help show that the change has been submitted.
- The valid new passport.
- The OCI card or booklet issued with the previous passport.
- The old passport, if available.
- The online application acknowledgement or status page, preferably printed.
- An approved e-OCI, if one has become available.
Keep the new passport valid for the full journey and the stay in India. The Bureau describes OCI as a lifelong visa facility, but says it is valid only with a valid passport.
The existing OCI booklet remains usable while processing continues
The physical OCI booklet remains valid while the passport details are being updated online. A new passport number, by itself, does not require a fresh OCI application. The update goes through the OCI Services Portal, using its OCI Miscellaneous Services section.
Airline staff may not know the current procedure. Carrying the old passport, when available, and a printed application status page can help document the link between the passport and the OCI record at check-in.
An application submission and an approved update are separate steps. The travel clarification covers the waiting period; it does not mean the record has already changed. Keep the existing OCI documentation until the update is approved.
Approval makes the updated e-OCI available to download
Once the application is approved, the holder can download an e-OCI and carry it for travel. Until then, the existing booklet remains usable while the online update is processed.
The key dates are the new passport’s issue date and the deadline for updating its details. Travel can take place between the first date and online acknowledgement, while the 90-day update period continues to run.
