Tears, missing pages and unreadable data can undermine the document
The U.S. Department of State and recent U.S. Customs and Border Protection field guidance identify several types of damage that can make a passport unacceptable for entry. The problems include tears, holes or partial detachment on the personal data page.
Smudged ink, water stains or fire damage can also create a problem when they make the photograph or biographical information difficult to read. Missing or torn-out visa pages and biographical pages fall into the same category.
The list also covers damaged electronic chips in biometric passports when scanners cannot read them. Unofficial entries, drawings or notations, particularly on the data page, may raise similar concerns.
The document must work as an identity document. A visa cannot repair a passport that officials cannot reliably inspect.
Airlines check that requirement before departure. Carriers may refuse passengers with questionable passports because they can face heavy fines from U.S. authorities for transporting people who lack proper documents.
Mexico’s passport-validity exemption does not cover physical damage
Mexico belongs to the U.S. “Six-Month Club.” Mexican passports generally need to remain valid only for the duration of the traveler’s stay, rather than for an additional six months.
That timing rule does not excuse a compromised passport. CBP updated the guidance in June 2026, stating that the exemption does not apply when the document’s physical condition is deficient.
Travelers therefore face two separate checks: the passport must cover the planned stay, and it must remain physically intact enough for officials and scanners to use.
A laser visa has limits outside nearby land crossings
Mexican citizens using a Laser Visa, also known as a Border Crossing Card, face an additional document rule. Authorities reiterated in a CBP bulletin dated July 22, 2026, that the card supports land entry within 25–75 miles of the border.
The card does not replace an intact Mexican passport for air travel or for trips deeper into the U.S. interior. A traveler who relies on the card still needs the passport when those circumstances apply.

The distinction can affect travelers who normally use the card for short border visits but later plan to fly or travel farther inland.
A damaged document can lead to more than a missed trip
Officials may turn a traveler back at the border or airport after finding the passport unusable. In some cases, a finding of inadmissibility based on document fraud, whether intentional or perceived, can result in cancellation of an existing visa.
The consequences can extend beyond the immediate journey. Mexican citizens with damaged passports must apply for replacements through Mexico’s Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores before attempting to re-enter the United States.
The U.S. government describes the passport check as part of a broader document-security effort. Under DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, the Department of Homeland Security has prioritized technical compliance to prevent identity fraud and ensure travelers can be accurately screened against biometric databases.
Mullin said in July 2026:
"DHS is committed to ensuring we. remove these fraudsters with every tool at our disposal. When you [submit] important facts or. lie, you forfeit the right to keep your [status]."
The statement concerned general immigration integrity rather than a passport-specific case, but it reflects the enforcement context surrounding the document checks.
Travelers should inspect the personal data page, visa pages and electronic chip before departure. Anyone with tears, missing pages, unreadable information or other serious damage should replace the passport through the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores before traveling to the United States.
