Why Indian Students Avoid Canada MBA Programs in 2023?

In 2023, interest in Canadian MBA programs among Indian students hit a five-year low, with economic challenges and limited job opportunities in Canada cited as major reasons. A shift towards studying in central and south Asia or within India has been noted, amidst rising domestic applications and changing global preferences.

Indian students increasingly opt out of Canada MBA programs due to economic challenges, job scarcity, and diplomatic strains.
The shift includes a rise in domestic applications in India and a preference for studying in central and south Asia.
Despite the decline, the US remains a top choice for Indian students pursuing MBA programs abroad.

In recent years, the landscape of Graduate Management Education (GME) has seen significant changes, influencing the choices of countless Indian students with Canada MBA dreams. However, the year 2023 marked a pivotal moment, setting a five-year low in the number of aspirants heading to Canada for their management studies.

Why Are Fewer Indian Students Opting for Canada MBA Programs?

Canada’s allure as the fourth preferred destination for Indian students seeking an international MBA degree appears to be waning. Experts have observed a decline in interest even for exchange programs in Canada, primarily attributed to the limited job opportunities and the prevailing economic situation in the country. However, Prof Himanshu Rai, director of IIM Indore, cautions against jumping to conclusions, suggesting that “it’s premature to make a confirmatory statement on any of the reasons.”

This downturn began in the tumultuous year of 2020, largely influenced by the pandemic, with the number of students preferring Canada dropping from 14% to 11%. Unfortunately, this trend has persisted, with the steepest decline recorded in 2023 — a fall from 10% to a mere 6%.

What Does the Data Say?

The “Prospective Students Survey 2024 Report” by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), exclusively accessed by TOI, highlights a shift in preference among Indian candidates. From 2019 to 2023, there’s been an eight-percentage point drop in candidates preferring to study in Canada. Concurrently, there’s been a significant uptick, an eight-point increase, in candidates’ preference to study within central and south Asia.

This trend might be partly due to the diplomatic strains between India and Canada, as the report mentions, “Given the survey was fielded throughout calendar year 2023, it is likely the challenges in diplomatic relations between India and Canada contributed to the most recent dip.”

Economic Challenges and The Shift towards Home

Another critical factor influencing this shift is the economic turmoil in Canada, accompanied by a volatile job market and high accommodation prices. Vaibhav Gupta, founder and CMO of iSchoolConnect, points out that “In Canada, the cost of living has gone up, and economic conditions aren’t great, and employment has gone down.” These factors are increasingly becoming deterrents for Indian students.

Interestingly, the report also indicates a growing preference among Indian candidates for studying closer to home. Approximately one-third of the candidates expressed a desire to stay near their families, a sentiment that aligns with the significant increase in domestic applications within India – from 41% in 2022 to 53% in 2023.

Where Else Are Indian Students Heading?

Despite the drop in interest for Canada MBA programs, the United States remains the top preferred destination globally, with 38% of Indian candidates leaning towards American universities. Following closely are central and south Asia and western Europe, preferred by 26% and 24% of Indian aspirants, respectively.

What Can Aspiring Students Do?

For students still dreaming of pursuing an MBA abroad, it’s crucial to conduct thorough research into potential destinations. Consider factors like job opportunities, cost of living, and the quality of education. Moreover, exploring opportunities within India or closer to home in central and south Asia could prove beneficial, as more educational and economic opportunities arise in these regions.

Moving Forward

As the landscape for graduate management education continues to evolve, adaptability will be key for Indian students navigating their international education journey. Whether choosing to study closer to home or venturing abroad, being well-informed and proactive in decision-making will help in achieving their aspirations. Despite the challenges, the pursuit of higher education remains a testament to the resilience and ambition of Indian students on the global stage.

This Article In A Nutshell:

The allure of Canada for Indian MBA aspirants is diminishing due to limited job opportunities and economic challenges. A shift towards studying closer to home and in central/south Asia is evident. Thorough research on destinations is advised, with the US being the top choice globally. Adaptability is crucial in the evolving landscape of graduate management education.
