Kyrgyzstan Proposes Joint Medical Center, Visa Regime Changes with South Korea

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov pressed South Korea on September 16, 2026, in Seoul to back a joint medical center in Kyrgyzstan and a simpler visa regime during talks with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. He also linked the meeting to export expansion into the Korean market. No deal was signed.

The proposal came in direct bilateral talks in Seoul. Japarov and Lee met there on the same day. The pitch stayed at the proposal stage.

Japarov spelled out the idea in direct terms:

"establishing a joint medical centre with South Korea in Kyrgyzstan" and "exploring ways to simplify the visa regime between the two countries."

The wording left the details open. No budget, staffing figure, location, or launch timeline accompanied the center idea. No exact visa category changes, fee changes, processing targets, or visa quota were announced. No schedule followed.

The talks also stretched well beyond health and travel. They touched healthcare, education, culture, climate policy, water resource management, and labor mobility. The agenda was broad. Export access sat beside them.

The same meeting sat inside the wider Central Asia–Republic of Korea relationship and summit-level cooperation. That regional frame gave the Seoul talks a broader setting. It was not a stand-alone announcement.

A Kyrgyz travel-information page updated in late August 2026 says Kyrgyz citizens still need the appropriate South Korean visa in advance for short-term travel. A separate 2026 travel guide says many visa-free nationalities can enter without a visa for tourism, while Kyrgyzstan remains on the list that requires advance approval. The rule still stands.
