The two firefighters’ identities were initially withheld while authorities notified their families. Nuñez traveled to the Gironde department Tuesday evening to meet local officials and the victims’ relatives.
Departures stopped while arrivals continued
The airport placed every departing flight on hold during the emergency. Arrivals continued, but delays affected some services because of the nearby fire.

The investigation began as the national fire season intensified. Extreme heatwaves and prolonged drought had placed the Gironde department under the highest red alert level for forest fires.

President Emmanuel Macron offered condolences to the families, loved ones and firefighters across France. He said:
“Two firefighters lost their lives while responding to a fire in Mérignac. I extend to their families, to their loved ones, and to the firefighters of France the condolences, the gratitude, and the support of the Nation.”
Nuñez also wrote on X: “The Nation bows before their courage and their commitment to protecting the French people.”
