Ireland will launch a passport renewal reminder service in 2027, allowing people to opt in to electronic notices when they apply for a first passport or renew an existing one.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee announced the plan on August 10 as part of wider upgrades to passport systems. The Department of Foreign Affairs expects the alerts to help reduce last-minute problems caused by expired documents.

The service will require an active choice during the application process. It will not enroll passport holders automatically.
"Along with other upgrades to the passport service's systems, in 2027 citizens applying for a passport for the first time or renewing their passport will be able to opt in to receive electronic communications, including passport expiry reminder notices."
Reminders may arrive by email or text message. The option will apply to passports issued from 2027 onwards.
The reminder option will be tied to a new application
People applying for their first passport or renewing one will be able to select electronic communications during the application. The system is designed to use contact information supplied at that point.
That approach reflects data protection requirements. McEntee said on August 9 that the department could not automatically reuse old delivery details collected when a passport was issued a decade earlier.
"My department has a statutory obligation from a data protection perspective to only use personal data. and would, therefore, be precluded from automatically using addresses used for the dispatch of passports 10 years ago."
Adult passports have a 10-year lifespan. That long interval can make renewal dates easy to miss.
The alerts are intended to encourage people to renew before travel becomes urgent. The Passport Service also aims to reduce requests for urgent 1-day or 5-day appointments.
Many countries require travelers to hold at least six months of remaining passport validity. A reminder could prompt a renewal before a document reaches that threshold.
Older passports will not be added retrospectively
Passports issued before 2027 will not qualify for automatic notices. The system cannot be applied retroactively under the stated data accuracy and GDPR constraints.
That leaves current holders responsible for checking their own expiry dates until they submit a qualifying application. Existing documents will continue to follow their current validity periods.
The application option is expected to form part of the passport process when the new system goes live. Applications and renewals remain available through the Passport Service.
The alerts form part of a wider modernization program
Minister Jerry Buttimer told the Seanad on July 1 that the reminder project belongs to a wider €8 million investment in high-security printing and system upgrades.
The work follows the unveiling of a redesigned Irish passport book and card in late June 2026. The new design uses a nature theme, including images of the Irish wolfhound, red fox and puffin, as well as updated security features.
The Passport Service issued over 500,000 passports during the first half of 2026. That figure covers a high-volume operation handling both first applications and renewals.
The reminder system will therefore sit alongside changes to the passport book, card and supporting technology. Its first users will be people making applications after the 2027 launch.
Travelers with earlier documents should continue checking validity against their departure dates and destination requirements. The new electronic notices will not cover passports issued before the system begins.
