Key Takeaways:

  • President Marcos urges faster e-visa processing for Indian tourists to boost Philippine tourism, addressing the PSAC Tourism Sector Group.
  • Current e-visa inefficiencies require Indian nationals to appear personally, causing delays and discouraging travel to the Philippines.
  • Recommendations include hiring third-party providers for efficient e-visa management, aiming to resolve system challenges promptly.

Marcos Advocates for Improved E-Visa Processing for Indian Tourists

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has directed concerned agencies to streamline the e-visa system for Indian nationals. During the 6th meeting with the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Tourism Sector Group at Malacañang Palace on Wednesday, Marcos emphasized that faster e-visa processing would boost tourism in the Philippines.

“We don’t have any such issues [with India]. So, I’m sure we can use their system,” Marcos stated.

Current E-Visa System Inefficiencies

Under the current system, Indian nationals must make a personal appearance at the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi, which compromises the efficiency of the e-visa process, noted LT Group president Lucio Tan.

Tan, a PSAC-TSG member, reported that e-visa processing for Indian nationals could take around a month, making the Philippines a less appealing destination for these tourists.

Recommendations for Streamlining

“In view of that, we recommend engaging a third-party service provider to establish, run, and maintain the e-visa system under the guidance of relevant government agencies,” Tan advised. “This will ensure that the program is consistently monitored and that any challenges in the process and the system will be immediately addressed,” he added.

Economic Impact

According to VisaVerge.com, Indian nationals are “repeat visitors” who typically spend eight nights and approximately $100 per person per day in the Philippines. About 78% of these tourists choose to stay in hotels, indulging in activities such as shopping, sightseeing, beach holidays, diving, visiting friends and relatives, and business investments.

This initiative is part of President Marcos’s broader agenda to enhance tourism by making the country’s visa processes more efficient for key markets like India.
