(DENVER, COLORADO) — Denver authorities said a man who was struck and killed by a Frontier Airlines jet during takeoff at Denver International Airport intended to commit suicide after breaching the airport perimeter late on May 8, 2026.
Denver Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Sterling McLaren identified the man as Michael Mott, 41, and ruled the death a suicide on May 12, 2026. “The cause of death is multiple blunt and sharp force injuries. The manner of death is suicide,” McLaren said.
McLaren said Mott died after being pulled into the aircraft’s engine and described it as “a purposeful act with a foreseeable fatal outcome.” Officials said the collision involved Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles.
The alarm sequence began at 11:13 p.m., when sensors detected a perimeter breach after Mott scaled an 8-foot fence topped with barbed wire. Authorities said the Frontier plane hit him at about 11:19 p.m., roughly two minutes after he entered the airfield.
Phillip Washington, chief executive officer of Denver International Airport, said security staff checked surveillance images after the alarm but failed to identify the intruder. “Safety is paramount in everything that we do. . This was a horrible and preventable tragedy that has affected many due to the actions of one person who apparently trespassed at an airport and lost their life as a result,” Washington said.
Washington said personnel “mistakenly attributed that alarm to a herd of deer that was nearby” after reviewing camera feeds. The lapse has focused scrutiny on how the airport monitors one of the country’s largest secured airfields.
Denver International Airport covers 53 square miles, about twice the size of Manhattan, and is ringed by 36 miles of perimeter fencing. Airport officials say the site uses layered security that includes ground-based radar, thermal imaging and CCTV.
Those systems did not stop Mott from reaching an active runway area before the departing aircraft accelerated through takeoff. Officials said the Airbus was traveling at about 150 mph when it struck him.
Frontier said the aircraft carried 224 passengers and 7 crew members, or 231 total. The airline said, “Smoke was reported in the cabin and the pilots aborted takeoff. . We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities.”
Twelve passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation, and five were taken to local hospitals. As of May 12, four had been released.
Passengers described a chaotic scene after the impact, saying the engine erupted in a fiery collision and smoke filled the cabin. Some said they remained on the tarmac in freezing conditions for more than an hour before transportation arrived.
Runway 17L stayed closed for about 12 hours and reopened Saturday morning. The closure affected airport operations into the next day at one of the busiest hubs in the region.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on May 10, 2026 that federal agencies were assisting local investigators. “The trespasser on the runway was then struck by Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 during takeoff at high speed. . No one should EVER trespass on an airport,” Duffy said.
Duffy said the Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration were supporting local law enforcement as they examine the breach. Officials have framed the case as both a security failure and a fatal act by a single intruder.
The National Transportation Safety Board is evaluating whether to open a formal safety investigation into the emergency evacuation. That review centers on the passenger response, the smoke reported inside the cabin, and the sequence that followed the aborted takeoff.
Questions also remain about surveillance intervals and how quickly airfield alarms are assessed in a sprawling environment where wildlife regularly appears near fence lines. Washington said the airport’s systems detected the breach, but the human response failed to separate a person from nearby deer in time.
Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said investigators were in contact with Mott’s family as they worked to determine his motivations. Authorities said Mott was a local resident, had no known employment connection to the airport and had minor previous law enforcement contacts.
The incident has drawn attention because a perimeter breach at a major commercial airport carries the risk of a mass-casualty disaster, even when the intruder is the only fatality. In this case, the aircraft remained on the ground, the pilots aborted takeoff, and all 231 people aboard survived.
Airport officials, the medical examiner and federal transportation authorities have each released statements as the inquiries continue through Denver International Airport, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
