Frankfurt health authorities reported a third death Thursday in an airport-linked malaria outbreak, after a resident of the Schwanheim district died from an infection acquired without international travel. The death brings the cluster to eight infections and three fatalities since July 2026.
The victim was one of two Schwanheim residents infected this week. Both had not traveled to a malaria-endemic region and had not worked at the airport, officials said.

The city is treating the cases as likely airport malaria. Investigators are examining whether an infected mosquito arrived on a plane and then spread the parasite in areas near the airport.
The two residents had been receiving hospital treatment before one died. The other remained among the patients connected to the outbreak.
The city said both residents contracted Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria parasite officials identify as the most dangerous type.

Peter Tinnemann, head of the city’s health department, said mosquitoes arriving through the airport can move several kilometers. Officials have urged people who live or work nearby to watch for symptoms and seek medical attention quickly.
Six airport employees were infected before the residential cases appeared
The first six patients were airport employees infected during the summer. Two of those workers died, and the deaths among the Schwanheim residents raised the outbreak’s toll to three.
Airport malaria remains rare, German public-health officials said. The disease does not pass directly between people. Mosquitoes transmit it.
The investigation focuses on a possible aircraft-borne mosquito because neither Schwanheim resident had the travel or workplace link seen as a likely clue in the earlier cases. Authorities are examining whether such an insect could have survived the journey and reached the surrounding area.
Doctors have been asked to consider malaria even when a patient has no history of travel to an endemic region. That request applies particularly to unexplained fever in people living near or working at the airport.

A local warning urged people near the airport to seek care promptly if they develop fever or flu-like symptoms. The health department has also told residents and doctors to remain alert.
The warning applies even without recent travel. Officials are trying to ensure that an unusual local transmission route does not delay diagnosis.
The city describes the outbreak as an extremely rare airport-related malaria event. The suspected route is an infected mosquito transported on an aircraft from a malaria-endemic region, followed by local spread around the airport area.
A similar case at the airport was last documented in 2023. The current investigation has not changed the basic transmission warning: malaria spreads through mosquitoes, not direct contact between infected people.
The third death came as officials continued monitoring the two Schwanheim infections and the wider cluster of eight cases. The health department’s request to doctors remains focused on unexplained fever, even when patients have not left Germany.
