IRCC refreshed its processing-time estimates on August 10. The update showed longer waits across most temporary residence categories, not just visitor records. The slowdown was broad, and the visitor-record line was not spared. The number sits at the top.

The pressure comes from an unprecedented volume of temporary resident applications and more extension requests from visitors already in Canada. IRCC ties the slowdown to both forces, which keep the queue full from two directions. Each new filing has to wait behind older work. The backlog is crowded.
Visitor records apply to people already inside Canada. If they apply before status expires, they can stay under maintained status until a decision arrives, even after months of waiting. Leaving Canada usually ends that protection, and travelers can also run into problems with provincial services or international travel. The rule travels poorly.
A visitor record does not authorize work or study. Applicants must show financial means and their intent to leave Canada at the end of the authorized period. The standard fee remains $100 CAD. No wage comes with it. It is a stay-extension document, not a work permit.
Maintained status keeps people in Canada, not on a new permit
Maintained status was formerly called implied status. It gives the applicant legal room to remain while the file is pending, provided the application goes in before the old status runs out. It does not widen the visitor record itself. The label changed.

IRCC calculates each estimate from the time it took to finalize 80% of applications in the previous months. The August 10 refresh used that formula. The number moves with the queue. It changes with the queue.
