The flight departed Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport at 8:11 p.m. local time. Heavy rain, hail and strong wind gusts forced the aircraft into a holding pattern southeast of Phoenix.
The crew sought another airport after Phoenix Goodyear Airport could not accommodate the aircraft. Controllers directed the pilots toward the military field, which became the safest available option.
United said the diversion was “the safest course of action.” The airline also thanked the Air Force and Phoenix Sky Harbor teams “for finding a solution for our customers on this flight.”
The aircraft landed at 8:49 p.m. It carried 160 people.
Fuel pressure narrowed the crew’s options as Phoenix arrivals stopped
Aircraft data showed roughly 6,300 pounds of fuel remaining at 8:26 p.m., about 23 minutes before landing. The reading represented less than two hours of flight time.
A minimum-fuel declaration tells air traffic control that a plane cannot accept additional delays without reaching an emergency state. It gives controllers a basis to prioritize the aircraft, but does not mean the plane has exhausted its usable fuel.
The airport’s ground stop ran from 8:28 p.m. to 9:59 p.m. A Phoenix Sky Harbor spokesperson said rain and gusty winds prompted the restriction.
The National Weather Service recorded monsoon outflow winds reaching 68 mph near the airport. Heavy rain and hail added to the landing problems. The same storm system left thousands without power and caused flash flooding across the Phoenix Valley that evening.
The timing left the crew with limited room to wait. The aircraft had already spent time circling southeast of the city when the diversion became necessary.
Controllers cleared a civilian jet for an unusual military landing
Radio traffic captured the crew asking about alternatives after controllers ruled Goodyear unsuitable for the aircraft. The pilot said 160 people were aboard and asked where the flight could go next.
The controller identified the military base but warned that it was an Air Force facility. The pilot then accepted the option and the jet proceeded there.
The base lies approximately 25 miles west of Phoenix Sky Harbor. Its emergency response crews support transient alerts, but commercial passenger diversions there remain highly unusual.
The facility is home to the Air Force’s largest F-35 training operation. A passenger jet arriving during a storm therefore created an uncommon overlap between civilian airline operations and a fighter-training installation.
The diversion followed the loss of a civilian alternative. Goodyear could not take the aircraft, while the storm-related ground stop kept normal Phoenix arrivals from resuming.
Passengers continued by bus after the safe landing
Passengers initially remained aboard while military and airline officials arranged transportation. They later traveled by chartered buses from the base to Phoenix Sky Harbor to complete the final part of their journey.
United reported no injuries among the passengers or crew. The airline’s aircraft carried registration N71411.
The sight of a commercial jet at the fighter base drew attention from local residents and aviation enthusiasts. Social media users described the event as “unheard of in Phoenix.”
The unusual landing did not end the flight’s disruption. Passengers continued by road, while the aircraft stayed at the military facility until airline officials arranged its repositioning.
The 737-900 was set to leave Arizona without passengers
On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the aircraft was scheduled to fly empty from the base to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The repositioning would return it to the commercial flight network without passengers aboard.
The storm affected more than one flight. Severe monsoon weather spread across the Phoenix area, bringing outflow winds, heavy rain, hail, power outages and flash flooding.
Flight UA2078’s diversion required coordination among the airline, civilian air traffic controllers, the Air Force and Sky Harbor personnel. The crew landed uneventfully, and the passengers completed their journey by bus while the aircraft prepared for its empty flight back to Houston.
