Key Takeaways:

  • Toronto’s population growth from July 2022 to July 2023 outpaced all major U.S. cities, driven by robust immigration.
  • The city added 221,588 people, surpassing Houston’s and Dallas’s growth figures, with central Toronto growing by 125,756 residents.
  • Immigration is the key driver; 49% of Toronto’s metropolitan population was born outside Canada by the 2021 Census.

Toronto’s population growth outpaced all major U.S. cities from July 2022 to July 2023, driven by a significant surge of immigration, according to a report by Toronto Metropolitan University’s Centre for Urban Research and Land Development.

During this period, Toronto’s metropolitan area grew by 221,588 people, surpassing Houston’s growth of 139,789 and Dallas’s 152,598. In terms of central city population growth, Toronto added 125,756 people, far exceeding San Antonio’s 21,970.

“Eight out of the top 10 fastest-growing central cities in North America are in Canada,” noted Senior Research Fellow Frank Clayton, the report’s author. The only U.S. cities in the top 10 were San Antonio and Fort Worth, both in Texas.

Immigration as a Key Driver

The report highlights that Toronto’s growth has been fueled largely by immigration, noting that by the 2021 Census, 49% of the city’s metropolitan population was born outside Canada. “What is surprising is the lack of awareness south of the border of how rapidly Toronto is becoming an economic powerhouse mainly built on robust immigration from many countries,” Clayton wrote.

No Decline in Canadian Metropolitan Areas

The report also found that “none of Canada’s 48 metropolitan areas experienced a decline in population in 2023,” showcasing the overall strong population growth across Canadian cities.

As reported by VisaVerge.com, the data for this population report was sourced from estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau and Statistics Canada.
