Riyadh Air will officially begin commercial flights with its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet in the third quarter of 2025, after delays caused by Boeing’s delivery problems. The airline’s first route will be daily flights between Riyadh and London Heathrow, starting October 26, 2025. This launch marks a major step in Saudi Arabia’s plan to become a global aviation hub and boost tourism.
The airline had planned to start earlier in 2025, but Boeing’s supply chain and labor issues pushed the launch to late October. Boeing will deliver only four Boeing 787-9s to Riyadh Air in 2025, instead of the eight originally expected. The first two aircraft are needed to start operations, and they are currently being assembled in Charleston, South Carolina.

Riyadh Air has placed firm orders for 39 Boeing 787-9s, 60 Airbus A321neo planes, and up to 50 Airbus A350s, with A350 deliveries beginning in 2030. The airline also holds options for up to 72 more Boeing 787s, showing a strong commitment to fleet growth and flexibility.
The Boeing 787-9s will have a premium-heavy cabin with 290 seats: 4 Business Elite suites, 24 Business, 39 Premium Economy, and 223 Economy seats. Business Elite passengers will enjoy Safran Unity Elite suites with large 4K screens, while all travelers will have access to advanced in-flight entertainment and charging options. Free high-speed WiFi will be available for passengers who join the airline’s frequent flyer program.
As of July 2025, ticket sales have not yet opened. Pre-booking is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2025, with updates posted on the official Riyadh Air website. The airline plans to add a new international destination every two months after launch, aiming to reach 100 cities by 2030. While London Heathrow is the first confirmed destination, other cities have not yet been announced.
Riyadh Air is owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and is a key part of the country’s Vision 2030 plan. This strategy aims to diversify the economy, increase tourism, and make Riyadh a leading aviation center. The National Aviation Strategy targets 330 million passengers and 4.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2030.
CEO Tony Douglas, formerly of Etihad Airways, leads the airline. Riyadh Air has already formed partnerships with Delta, Virgin Atlantic, and Turkish Airlines. There is talk about joining a global airline alliance, but this is unlikely for now.
For travelers, Riyadh Air’s entry will bring more choices and better service on long-haul routes, starting with Riyadh to London Heathrow. The airline’s focus on digital services and luxury cabins is expected to raise standards in the region. For the aviation industry, this launch increases competition and supports Saudi Arabia’s economic goals.
As reported by VisaVerge.com, industry experts see Riyadh Air as a strong new player that could change the Middle East aviation market if it meets its promises.
