- Spirit Airlines ceased all flight operations as of May 2, 2026, after 34 years in service.
- Financial collapse followed failed federal bailout talks and surging fuel prices linked to geopolitical conflict.
- Affected travelers should request immediate refunds through Spirit or their third-party booking agencies.
(UNITED STATES) — Spirit Airlines shut down all flights at 3:00 a.m. ET on May 2, 2026, ending 34 years as an ultra-low-cost carrier and leaving travelers to sort out refunds, rebookings, and missed connections. If your trip was booked on Spirit, check your reservation now and start a refund claim if you paid by credit or debit card.
The collapse followed failed bailout talks with the U.S. government and a collapsed $500 million federal bailout deal with the Trump administration and key bondholders. Spirit said surging fuel prices tied to the 2026 Iran war pushed the airline into terminal financial damage, after years of weak margins and repeated restructurings.
Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice, first in November 2024 and again on August 29, 2025. The carrier emerged from the first case in March 2025, then slid back into court months later as oil prices climbed and cash pressures deepened.
The shutdown stranded passengers and employees at airports nationwide. Spirit had already shown signs of strain earlier this year, including more than 250 flight cancellations in February 2026 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, Palm Beach International, and Orlando International airports because of crew shortages.
Spirit’s exit also changes pricing on routes where it had forced competitors to hold down fares. A CBS News analysis of Cirium data found that when Spirit left routes in the past, average round-trip fares rose 23%, or about $60, while passenger volume fell 20%. That pattern is what many travelers now face again, especially on dense leisure routes in Florida, the Caribbean, and parts of the Northeast.
| What changes | What travelers should expect |
|---|---|
| Spirit exits a route | Higher average fares, based on prior route data |
| Direct Spirit booking paid by card | Automatic refund processing |
| Third-party booking | Contact the agency or OTA that sold the ticket |
| Incidental costs | No reimbursement for hotels, taxis, or replacement flights |
Refund handling depends on how the ticket was purchased. Spirit says customers who booked directly and paid by credit or debit card should receive automatic refunds. Travelers who booked through an online travel agency, a consolidator, or a corporate booking tool need to contact that seller instead.
Compensation beyond the base fare is far less certain. Vouchers, trip credits, and Free Spirit points compensation will be decided later in bankruptcy court. Spirit also says it will not cover incidental expenses such as hotels, ground transport, meals, or the cost of buying a replacement ticket on another airline.
That leaves many travelers facing same-day rebooking bills as summer fares rise. Competing airlines have already offered rescue fares on select routes when Spirit disappeared from markets in the past, but those fares do not last long. In many cases, the cheaper option is already gone by the time stranded passengers search for it.
Spirit customers still trying to change or cancel flights can use the airline’s My Trips page at www.spirit.com, the mobile app, chat, social media channels, or airport agents. Spirit also said bookings made 7 or more days in advance qualify for a 24-hour full refund window. Changes can be made up to 1 hour before departure through some channels.
Passengers should also check live flight updates before heading to the airport. Spirit’s flight-status page and FlightAware list real-time cancellations and delays, and the U.S. Department of Transportation has warned that bankruptcy cases can complicate what travelers are owed and when they receive it.
Spirit’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy history also matters for frequent flyers. Free Spirit members should save screenshots of balances, receipts, and confirmation emails, since mileage compensation or conversion will be handled through the court process rather than at the airport counter. Anyone with an upcoming Spirit itinerary should file for a refund now, then compare replacement fares quickly; summer prices tend to climb fastest on routes Spirit once held down.
