Nicaragua opened visa-free entry immediately for Hong Kong SAR passport holders. The Solomon Islands will follow on August 26, 2026. Both allow stays of up to 30 days. The second date is the one to watch.
Hong Kong's Immigration Department said the move lifts the total to 178 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations. From August 26, 2026, nationals of Nicaragua and the Solomon Islands can also enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 30 days. One announcement set both directions in motion. The calendar does the rest.
The department tied the deal to Belt and Road links. An Immigration Department spokesman said:
"Nicaragua and Solomon Islands are along the Belt and Road. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, this visa-free arrangement brings greater travel convenience to travellers from Hong Kong, Nicaragua and Solomon Islands, thereby strengthening Hong Kong's ties with the two countries in tourism, culture and economy."
The announcement came on July 27, 2026. Benson Kwok Joon-fung, IDSM, heads the Immigration Department. He oversees the city's travel-document decisions.
The Henley Passport Index 2026, released in July 2026, ranked the HKSAR passport 14th globally. It stood 17th in 2025. Two places gone in a year.
Two countries, one 30-day ceiling
The timing splits neatly.

The split is easy to miss on a booking screen.
Nicaragua's earlier visa sweep left this opening unusually narrow
In February 2026, Nicaragua issued Disposición Administrativa No. 002-2026. The measure moved 128 countries into Category C. Travelers in that group need a consulted visa.
The new opening for Hong Kong holders sits inside that stricter system. It is a carve-out. Not a broad loosening.
The Solomon Islands had already been moving closer to Beijing
The Solomon Islands established diplomatic relations with the PRC in 2019. A mutual visa exemption with mainland China took effect on January 27, 2025.
That earlier change now sits beside the Hong Kong arrangement. August 26, 2026 is the next date on the calendar.
