The UK expanded the Global Talent visa on 6 August 2026, opening the route to more than 100 research-intensive businesses that can now back scientists in life sciences, AI and clean energy, according to an official announcement. The gate moved. Ministers said the change is meant to pull international talent into research that feeds British industry.
"The UK is already a magnet for the world's most brilliant minds. By expanding the Global Talent visa to more than 100 businesses, we’re making it easier than ever for our most innovative companies to recruit eligible researchers who will develop the medicines, technologies and industries of the future right here in Britain."
Jonathan Reynolds, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, tied the expansion to the government’s industrial strategy. He cast it as a way to help firms recruit the people they need. The push is deliberate.
Until now, the route mostly ran through universities and research institutes. That changed. More than 100 companies can now support applicants through the UK Research and Innovation endorsed-funder pathway, widening access to commercial employers that already fund their own research. AstraZeneca and Jaguar Land Rover were named among the firms involved, alongside IBM, Arm and GlaxoSmithKline.
The old channels still stand. The Royal Society and UK Research and Innovation remain the familiar endorsers for science and research applicants, and people with a qualifying prestigious prize can still apply directly. Others still have to clear the exceptional talent or exceptional promise test. It is not automatic.
That wider bench matters because it gives stronger researchers more options. Scientists and engineers can step into company-led R&D, move into a spin-out, or shift to academic work without filing for a new visa. The path is also more flexible than a single-employer permit. Recent moves point in that direction, too: Prof. Bryony DuPont, a renewable energy researcher, joined the University of Strathclyde from Oregon State University, and Dr. Ivana Bukvin left Stanford University for the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge.
Fees stay high, but decisions stay fast

The route has already built a long record. Since it began, it has supported over 12,500 people from 130 countries. As of March 2026, China led with 842 grants, the United States had 824 and India 733. Over 99% of applications have ended in a grant. The numbers are hard to miss.

Dr. Joe Marshall, chief executive of the National Centre for Universities and Business, welcomed the expansion and said access to global talent is now "mission critical" for the private sector. His message echoed the government’s own line. The labour market for researchers is global.
Industrial policy now reaches into research hiring
Lord Vallance said the country’s top researchers are choosing the UK to advance their work, and the policy now reaches into hiring as well as immigration. Officials say the move sits inside a 10-year plan to reindustrialise Britain and concentrates on eight high-growth sectors. That is the broader frame.
The government also plans to broaden a separate visa scheme for companies working in quantum computing and engineering biology. A £54 million fund will help 12 selected research institutions cover relocation and laboratory setup costs for incoming international teams. That money is meant to land in labs, not press releases.
