Key Takeaways

  • The ranking’s overseas group includes people born or raised in India, not just Indian citizens who moved abroad.

The M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 counted 156 non-resident Indians and other India-linked people living abroad, up from 101 a year earlier. The increase was a little over 50%. The figure tracks people appearing on the list, not a count of Indians who emigrated during the year.

The list was released on September 23, 2026, using a wealth snapshot dated August 24, 2026. Its overseas tally covers a defined group. The report includes people born or brought up in India, regardless of their current residence or passport.

That definition reaches beyond a formal count of Indian citizens moving abroad. It captures India-origin individuals and families whose current lives and businesses are based elsewhere. The year-on-year rise is a change in the list’s overseas cohort.

There were 1,810 people on the full ranking, including 1,654 based in India. Each person needed wealth of at least ₹1,000 crore to qualify. The overseas group therefore forms one part of a much wider wealth ranking.

The combined wealth of everyone listed stood at ₹187.5 lakh crore, equivalent to $1.96 trillion. India’s dollar-billionaire count reached 391, an increase of 27 from the prior year. Those figures describe the scale of the ranking, not a measure of migration.

The Hurun Rich List 2026 also put Gautam Adani and family at the top of the overall ranking. The leading fortunes show how far the richest India-based family stands above the top overseas name.

Adani leads the national ranking, while Mittal tops the overseas group

RankPerson or familyReported wealthBase or distinction
1Gautam Adani and family₹9.23 lakh croreRichest overall
2Mukesh Ambani and family₹8.63 lakh croreSecond overall
3Lakshmi Niwas Mittal and family₹3.39 lakh croreLondon; richest NRI
4Cyrus Poonawalla and family₹3.03 lakh crore
5Roshni Nadar Malhotra and family₹2.79 lakh crore

The overall order places Adani ahead of Ambani, while the third-ranked family leads the overseas category. Mittal’s reported fortune is less than half the amount assigned to the top-ranked family. The list identifies him as based in London.

Anil Agarwal and family also feature among the leading overseas-based wealth holders. The list places them in London, with reported wealth of ₹2.08 lakh crore. Their entry adds another London-based business family to the overseas group.

Overseas listers are concentrated in three named destinations

The report lists 90 overseas-based people in the US, 31 in the UAE and 16 in the UK. Those are the country counts highlighted for the 156-person group. The figures distinguish where listed people live; they do not identify when they moved or why.

The tally combines people with differing residence and citizenship circumstances under the report’s India-born-or-raised criterion. Its year-to-year comparison therefore describes the overseas membership of this wealth ranking. It should not be read as a national migration count.

That distinction is especially relevant to the headline rise. A person can qualify because of Indian birth or upbringing while living abroad, regardless of passport. The list’s measure is wealth and connection to India, not a record of departures from the country.

The report points to technology as a source of new fortunes

The report identifies AI, data centres, semiconductors, investment management and technology as fields increasingly generating new wealth. It also says many of the biggest new entrants are based outside India. The findings place new fortunes alongside the established business families occupying the top ranks.

The list’s overseas component thus includes both familiar leading fortunes and newer entrants, within a ranking built around wealth and Indian origins. The August 24 snapshot provides the reference point for those fortunes, while the report’s sector findings point to the industries it associates with emerging wealth.
