Namibia Visa Policy Changes for Non-Reciprocating Countries

Namibia is implementing a visa policy for countries with no visa reciprocity with Namibians. Stay updated on the latest Namibia Visa and Travel Policy changes.

Key Takeaways:

  • Namibia’s new visa policy targets 31 nations that don’t offer reciprocal visa-free access to Namibians, including the U.S. and Germany.
  • Impacted travelers must apply online and pay a fee for a visa on arrival; implementation details are forthcoming

  • The policy aims to foster diplomatic reciprocity and fairness after years of Namibia’s unilateral visa-free access to many countries.

What Changes are Coming to Namibia’s Visa Policy?

Namibia is set to introduce a new visa policy targeting countries that do not reciprocate its visa-free access for Namibians. According to Etienne Maritz, the Executive Director at MHAISS, this policy will affect 31 nations, including prominent countries like Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Britain, and the United States.

Who Will Be Affected by the New Namibia Visa Policy?

The new travel policy primarily impacts visitors from countries that have not shown reciprocal visa policies toward Namibia. Travelers from the 31 affected countries can expect to need a visa upon arrival. They will be required to apply online and pay the necessary fee to obtain their visa before their visit.

How Will the New Visa Policy Work?

Visitors from the impacted nations must fill out an online application form and pay the required fee to get their visa on arrival in Namibia. Although the exact implementation date and application procedures are yet to be announced, Maritz assured that these details would be communicated through diplomatic channels soon.

Why Is Namibia Introducing This Policy?

Etienne Maritz explained the rationale behind the new policy, emphasizing that it aims to foster fair and balanced diplomatic relations.

“This decision comes after years of Namibia extending goodwill gestures and providing favorable treatment to citizens of several countries without receiving reciprocal treatment,” he said.

The goal is not to hinder legitimate travel but to establish the principle of reciprocity in international relations. Namibia remains committed to maintaining positive and mutually beneficial diplomatic relations while welcoming tourists and visitors.

What Are the Details of the Visa-on-Arrival Policy?

Alongside the new measure, Namibia previously introduced a visa-on-arrival policy to boost tourism and trade. Starting April 18, 2024, visitors can receive visas on arrival at several entry points, including Walvis Bay Harbour, Hosea Kutako International Airport, and Walvis Bay Airport.

Foreign travelers can also access visa-on-arrival services at various border posts such as Trans Kalahari, Katima Mulilo, Ngoma, Impalila Island, Oshikango, Mohembo, Ariamsvlei, Noordoewer, and Oranjemund. This type of visa costs 1,200 Namibian dollars (approximately $65) and is valid for 90 days.

How Does the New Policy Affect Namibian Citizens?

Namibian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free entry to 53 countries. Unfortunately, the new policy aims to encourage other countries to provide similar benefits in return. As of May 2024, the Namibian passport ranks 127th according to the VisaGuide Passport Index, and Namibian citizens require visas to travel to 124 countries.

Conclusion

Namibia’s new visa policy underscores the importance of mutual respect in international travel regulations. While aiming to maintain balanced diplomatic relations, the government also seeks to enhance ease of travel, tourism, and trade.

Through this policy, Namibia hopes to create a fairer system of international travel and ensure its citizens receive the same courtesy and goodwill extended to others.
