The process of applying for a French visa in the United States is about to undergo a major transformation. Starting April 18, 2025, the company TLScontact will take over the responsibility of managing French visa applications, ending the longstanding partnership with VFS Global. As part of this shift, ten newly established Visa Application Centers (VACs) will serve applicants across the country, marking a new chapter in how U.S.-based travelers apply for visas to visit France 🇫🇷. This change aims to simplify and improve the visa application process while reflecting the French government’s commitment to modernizing its consular services.

Transition to TLScontact: What Changes Starting April 18?

This significant transition centers around TLScontact, a Paris-based company that specializes in visa and consular services. Beginning on April 18, 2025, the firm will fully manage French visa applications for U.S. residents. Replacing VFS Global’s system, TLScontact will operate through ten modern Visa Application Centers located in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Applicants in cities both large and small will have access to these centers, ensuring nationwide availability.

At these centers, applicants will submit their visa materials and biometric data, such as fingerprints. Once collected, this data, along with the completed applications, will be sent to the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., for final decision-making. TLScontact’s involvement will also introduce new services for added comfort and convenience, making the process more appealing for many applicants.

This step by France is part of a broader effort to modernize administrative operations while also improving the applicant experience. By selecting TLScontact, a company with roots in France and a strong global reputation, the French government hopes to refine overall service and meet the changing needs of today’s travelers.

Why TLScontact is Taking Over

The choice to move from VFS Global to TLScontact is a deliberate one. For the past decade, VFS Global, a Dubai-based company, handled French visa applications across the U.S. through a network of Visa Application Centers. While this system was largely effective, the French government wanted to update and realign its approach. By selecting TLScontact, France has opted for a company with deeper familiarity with French consular and administrative systems.

The decision allows France to integrate its visa application process more directly with its consular networks. TLScontact’s headquarters in Paris ensures closer collaboration with French authorities and a better understanding of the cultural and operational standards that are essential to the visa application system. For travelers, this means quicker processing times, better communication, and more responsive service overall.

Changes for Visa Applicants: A New Process and New Services

While the fundamental goal of obtaining a French visa hasn’t changed, the new system operated by TLScontact will arrive with updates to the process and additional options for applicants.

Streamlined Application Steps

The new application experience will begin on the France-Visas platform, the official portal for all French visa applications. Applicants must first create an account and complete their visa application on this site. Once finished, they’ll be redirected to the TLScontact platform to book their appointment at one of the ten Visa Application Centers.

At these centers, applicants will present their required paperwork, submit biometric data such as fingerprints, and pay the necessary fees. Once the materials have been processed, applications will be forwarded to the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. Applicants will receive their passports containing the visa decision through mail. This streamlined process centralizes communication between applicants and the French government, removing unnecessary complications and middle steps.

Enhanced Services

One of the most promising aspects of TLScontact’s involvement is the introduction of optional services designed to improve applicant convenience. These features include:

  • Premium Lounges: Applicants can choose to enhance their experience by booking appointments that allow access to premium lounges. These lounges provide added comfort and expedited service during the appointment.
  • Prime Time Appointments: Recognizing that many people have busy schedules, this option allows applicants to book appointments outside regular business hours.
  • Apply Anywhere Service: One of the most revolutionary aspects of TLScontact’s offerings is the “Apply Anywhere” service, which lets applicants submit their materials from a location of their choice. This service is particularly beneficial for individuals in remote areas or those unable to visit one of the Visa Application Centers.

These services, while optional, reflect a larger emphasis on flexibility and customer-focused care, making the application process less stressful and more efficient for U.S.-based travelers.

Updated Costs

The fees associated with applying for a visa through TLScontact will differ slightly from those under VFS Global. A short-stay visa, which covers stays of 90 days or less, will cost €45 (around $48). For those needing a long-stay visa, such as for work or studies, the fee will be €220 (around $232). These amounts are consistent with fees in other countries and demonstrate a standardized approach to pricing for French visas. Applicants must prepare for these costs as they plan to start their visa process.

Preparing for the Transition: Key Steps to Keep in Mind

The timeline for the transition from VFS Global to TLScontact means travelers have a matter of weeks to familiarize themselves with the new system. To ensure a smooth process, visa applicants should consider taking the following proactive measures:

  1. Monitor Updates: Applicants should regularly consult official sources, such as the French Embassy’s website or TLScontact’s platform, for the latest updates or instructions regarding the process.

  2. Plan Early: With the switch in systems happening in April, demand for appointments may surge during the initial months of TLScontact’s operations. Scheduling appointments ahead of time will help avoid last-minute delays.

  3. Double-Check Appointment Details: Before heading to the Visa Application Center, applicants should confirm all details, including the exact address, required documents, and hours of operation.

By preparing in advance, travelers can avoid disruptions and make the most of TLScontact’s improved services.

Broader Impacts of the Transition

The decision to entrust TLScontact with French visa applications in the U.S. has important implications for travelers, the French Consulate, and the global visa market.

Improved Efficiency for the Consulate

The new system promises improved collaboration between the Visa Application Centers and French consular services. For the French Embassy, this partnership means enhanced efficiency in decision-making and application tracking, resulting in shorter processing times. By leveraging modern digital tools, TLScontact will streamline communication and coordination between applicants and embassy officials.

TLScontact’s Expanding Presence

TLScontact already operates in over 20 countries, providing visa services for multiple nations. The addition of the U.S. market considerably expands its global influence and emphasizes its position as a major player in visa management. This contract allows the Paris-based company to bring innovative solutions to one of the most significant consular partnerships worldwide.

Impact on VFS Global

Though VFS Global will no longer manage French visa applications in the U.S., the company remains one of the biggest names in visa services globally. Its work in countries like the UK, Portugal, and Austria ensures its continued success. The competitive nature of the visa service industry means changes like this are part of the natural evolution of the sector, as governments seek new partners to better align with their goals.

Conclusion: What Travelers Can Expect

TLScontact officially taking over responsibility for French visa applications in the U.S. on April 18, 2025, signals a step forward in consular innovation. The updated system will offer travelers improved services, including new Visa Application Centers and flexible options such as “Apply Anywhere.” While applicants must adjust to the new procedures, the French government’s decision underscores its dedication to providing modern and efficient consular services.

As reported by VisaVerge.com, this transition also reflects broader efforts by France to improve its partnerships and foster international accessibility. For travelers, these changes bring the promise of faster processing times, easier access to application services, and a smoother journey from start to finish. Whether your next trip to France involves studying, working, or exploring its cultural riches, the process of getting a visa seems set to become significantly easier and more convenient with TLScontact at the helm.

Great as an update on the company however not informative enough for applicant. I would like to know how to access addresses of application sites and whether the biometrics information is taken at the site or I have to arrange it elsewhere.
