Key takeaways

UAE students increasingly pursue higher education abroad, choosing unconventional options like Japan and the Netherlands.
UK remains a top choice despite visa changes, with rising undergraduate enrollments and Canada losing appeal.
Factors influencing choices include course flexibility, quality of life, cost, and unique opportunities in various countries.

As the world becomes more interconnected, students from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are increasingly looking abroad for their higher education opportunities. With recent visa changes and a desire for unique educational experiences, destinations such as the UK, Netherlands, Japan, and even the Czech Republic are gaining popularity among UAE students. This post unpacks these trends, focusing on why these countries are attracting students from the UAE, and how visa changes are affecting their choices.

UK Still a Prime Destination for UAE Students

Top UK Universities Preferred by UAE Students Amid Visa Changes
Discover why UK, Japan, and the Netherlands are top choices for UAE students studying abroad. Visa changes in the UK haven't deterred students, with many opting for UK universities for a bachelor's degree.

Despite visa changes that came into effect recently, which restrict many students from bringing dependents to the UK, the country remains a favored destination for those pursuing undergraduate degrees. In 2023, there was a significant increase in the number of UAE students accepted into British universities, with 1,710 applicants receiving offers, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. This growth is noteworthy, especially when the overall number of international students from outside the EU accepted fell by 0.9%.

Rema Menon, director of Counselling Point Training and Development, explains, “The visa regulations mainly impact postgraduate students and a lot of UAE students are going for undergraduate programmes.” This suggests that the UK’s allure for UAE students studying abroad remains strong, especially for those seeking bachelor’s degrees. Furthermore, with Canada’s recent policy changes leading to a cut in the number of international student visas, some students are shifting their focus towards UK universities for UAE students.

Exploring Less Conventional Destinations

UAE students are not just limiting their options to traditional study destinations. Countries like Finland and Japan are becoming increasingly popular for their unique offerings and the quality of life they provide. Vandana Mahajan, founder of Futures Abroad, notes a significant surge in interest for Finland, attributing the country’s popularity to the ability of students to bring their families alongside. Moreover, Japan is attracting students with unconventional countries, offering distinct academic and career prospects.

In 2023, the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) in Abu Dhabi reported that 63 Emirati students were pursuing their studies in Japan, highlighting the growing interest in the country. Mahajan adds, “We are seeing more applications now for Europe and the US than any other destinations like Canada or Australia. Those are not so popular at the moment.”

Higher Education in Europe: A Rising Trend

Students are also considering other European countries like the Netherlands for their higher education needs. The Netherlands, in particular, is appealing due to its extensive range of English-taught programs and quality of life. Madhav Juneja, UAE country manager for Crimson Education, states, “I’d say the Netherlands is the top one [in Europe], just in terms of English taught programmes available for international students.”

The cost of education is another factor influencing the choice of destination. In the Netherlands, international students from outside the EU can expect to pay between €6,000 (Dh23,755) and €15,000 per year for a bachelor’s degree, making it an attractive destination for many.

Students Weigh Quality of Life and Course Flexibility

For students like Areesh Sami and Yagiz Ozenci, the decision to study abroad is influenced by factors such as quality of life, course flexibility, and future career opportunities. Sami, who received a conditional offer to study law at Vrije University in Amsterdam, chose the Netherlands mainly for its welcoming student life and interdisciplinary courses. Ozenci, on the other hand, is heading to the United States to pursue economics and physics due to the country’s vast opportunities and the reputation of its universities.

Concluding Thoughts

As visa regulations evolve and students seek new educational horizons, the pattern of UAE students studying abroad is shifting. Traditional destinations like the UK continue to draw students, thanks to their reputable universities and extensive range of courses. However, there’s a noticeable trend towards less conventional choices, with countries like Finland, Japan, and the Netherlands offering unique advantages.

For students contemplating an international education, it’s crucial to stay informed about visa changes for international students in the UK and other destinations. Prospective students should consult official immigration websites such as the UK Government’s Visa & Immigration page (gov.uk), and relevant resources for the countries they are interested in.

In an ever-changing global education landscape, the flexibility to adapt to new rules and explore less traditional paths can lead to enriching academic and personal experiences abroad.
