(MUSCAT, OMAN) — Qatar Airways began operating limited relief flights on Thursday to move stranded passengers after regional airspace closures disrupted normal travel through Doha.
The airline said it will contact eligible travelers directly with assigned flight details and instructions, positioning the service as a targeted measure rather than an open, walk-up option at the airport.
Qatar Airways also warned passengers not to go to the airport unless they receive an official notification from the airline, and urged travelers to ensure the carrier can reach them through the contact details on their booking.
The relief flights come as regular operations remain suspended because of the closure of Qatari airspace, leaving some travelers seeking alternatives through nearby countries while they wait for flights to resume.
Qatar Airways said it is prioritizing stranded passengers with existing confirmed bookings that were affected by the disruption, without publicly setting out additional priority criteria such as class of service or nationality.
Notifications go directly to those deemed eligible, with Qatar Airways providing the arrangements and instructions for travel, the airline said, adding that passengers should expect an assigned itinerary rather than the ability to request a seat at the airport.
That outreach-based approach also means travelers who have not been contacted should not assume they can board a relief flight by presenting themselves at check-in, the airline said.
From Muscat, Qatar Airways listed relief flights to London Heathrow, Berlin, Copenhagen, Madrid, Rome, and Amsterdam, offering a set of European destinations from Oman while normal routing through Doha remains disrupted.
The airline also announced a relief flight from Riyadh to Frankfurt, adding a second departure point in the region for passengers trying to reach Europe while the airspace restrictions continue.
Qatar Airways framed Muscat and Riyadh as reachable alternatives for some stranded passengers, noting that travelers may be repositioning overland to those departure points as they seek a way to continue their trips.
For passengers who might be selected, Qatar Airways stressed readiness steps tied to its notification process, including keeping booking contact details current and monitoring messages for the assigned flight information and instructions.
The airline directed travelers to update details via the Qatar Airways website or the Qatar Airways mobile app, saying that missed outreach could affect a passenger’s ability to take up an offered seat.
Qatar Airways said the suspension of regular operations will continue while the Qatari airspace closure remains in place, and pointed to a scheduled update from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority on Friday.
Affected passengers with bookings can also use the airline’s self-service channels, including its website and app, to request date changes or refunds under the disruption policy while they wait for further updates on when normal operations can resume.
