Who Can Use Malaysia’s Autogates from 1 June 2023?

Starting from June 1, 2023, Malaysia will allow international travellers from 46 countries to use its autogate system, a significant expansion from the previous limit of 10 countries. Home Minister Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced the inclusion of 36 new low-risk countries on May 16, aiming to ease congestion and waiting times at Malaysia’s key entry points such as KLIA Terminal 1 and 2.

“This brings the total number of countries able to use the autogate facilities to 46,” said Saifuddin, emphasizing the objective of reducing long queues and expediting the immigration clearance process.

Among the newly included countries are several European Union member states alongside Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. These will join the previously allowed countries: Australia, Brunei, Germany, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, United States, and United Kingdom.

How Will This Affect Immigration Clearance?

Increased Autogate Machines

To accommodate the rising number of eligible travelers, Malaysia is installing 40 additional autogate machines, bringing the total to 98. “I am confident that this initiative will ease and accelerate the immigration clearance process, without compromising on security,” said Saifuddin. From January to April 2023 alone, Malaysia saw an influx of 40 million travellers, necessitating this swift action to manage entry points efficiently.

Special Provisions for Diplomats

The autogate facility will also extend to all diplomatic staff working in Malaysia, including their family members. The Ministry is collaborating with Wisma Putra to ensure smooth immigration procedures for diplomats, especially as Malaysia prepares to chair ASEAN next year.

Why China’s Inclusion is Significant

China is one of the top five nations sending tourists to Malaysia. Allowing Chinese citizens to use the autogates will not only expedite immigration clearance but is also expected to boost tourism significantly. “This will ensure faster and smoother clearance at our entry points and help boost tourism,” highlighted Saifuddin.

How Will Security Be Managed?

Assurance on Security Measures

Saifuddin assures that the security will not be compromised with this new facility: “I must emphasise that the use of autogates by foreign travellers will not affect our security as information about them will still be captured and recorded.” The automated system ensures that all essential data is securely stored and can be accessed just as reliably as traditional manual processes.

How Will This Move Benefit Tourists?

Feedback from the Travel Sector

Nigel Wong, President of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), endorsed the government’s initiative, stressing its multiple benefits. “This will not only improve efficiency at entry points but also elevate the image of Malaysia as an accessible, friendly, and attractive tourist destination,” said Wong. Enhancing the ease of entry is expected to make Malaysia even more appealing, particularly in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026.

He emphasized that both business and leisure travelers would greatly benefit from this facility, as seamless travel is high on the priority list for modern tourists.

What Are the Future Plans?

Reciprocal Measures and Further Initiatives

When asked about seeking reciprocal measures from the 46 countries, Saifuddin clarified that the focus remains on enhancing Malaysia’s immigration clearance processes for now. “We will consider later in the future if we want reciprocity,” he noted.

Moreover, the Home Ministry plans to collaborate with the Transport Ministry to ensure clear signage at airports, informing travellers about the autogate service. Airlines operating in and out of Malaysia will also be briefed to notify their passengers of the new facilities.

Improvements at Land Checkpoints

Recognizing the high traffic at land checkpoints like Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Second Link Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar in Johor, Saifuddin mentioned exploring additional initiatives to manage congestion. One such measure under consideration is the implementation of a quick response (QR) code Immigration Clearance System, aimed at expediting movement at these critical boundary points.

Expert Opinions: Will This Initiative Meet Expectations?

Industry experts and government officials have expressed optimism regarding the effectiveness of this measure. Wong of MATTA pointed out that making entry processes smoother presents Malaysia as a more welcoming location, which will positively influence both tourism and business travel.

By extending the autogate facility to a larger pool of international travellers, Malaysia aims to set a standard in the region for efficient and secure immigration processing. This step is in line with global trends towards automation and digital solutions, enhancing user experience without sacrificing safety.

How Does This Impact Malaysia’s Tourism Strategy?

Boosting Tourism

The streamlined immigration process aligns with Malaysia’s broader tourism strategy, making the country more accessible to a diverse range of international visitors. With the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign on the horizon, these improvements are well-timed to maximize tourist influx during this key period.

Implementing these changes aims to provide a seamless entry experience for travelers, making Malaysia an attractive destination by cutting down on cumbersome procedures. As international travel picks up post-pandemic, such initiatives are critical in positioning Malaysia as a top travel destination.

By focusing on practical, user-friendly innovations while safeguarding national security, Malaysia is paving the way for a more efficient and welcoming travel environment. The introduction of additional autogate facilities is a forward-thinking measure that illustrates Malaysia’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and boosting its international appeal.
