Australian Passport Price Increase Alert: Apply Before July Hike

Aussies urged to apply for new passports before major price hike in Australia travel as Federal Budget 2024 reveals a 15% increase on July 1.

Key Takeaways:

  • Renew passports before July 1, 2024, to avoid a 15% fee increase from $325 to $373.75.
  • Government increases fees to modernize passport systems and generate $349 million over three years.
  • Rising travel costs impact Australians, with many borrowing money or canceling trips; advanced planning can save money.

Should You Renew Your Australian Passport Before July 1, 2024?

Australians planning an international trip within the next year are advised to renew their passports now, as the Federal Budget 2024 will bring a significant passport price increase starting on July 1.

How Much Will Passport Fees Increase?

The Australian passport, already among the world’s most expensive, saw a fee hike with indexation on New Year’s Day. However, starting July 1, the cost of a 10-year adult passport will rise by 15%, from $325 to $373.75. This nearly $50 increase makes it essential to act quickly.

Gary Ross Hunter, a travel expert from Finder, shared some advice:

“If you’re planning to go on an international trip within the next 12 months and your passport is up for renewal, it’s best to get a new one before July 1 so you can avoid the extra fee,”

Why Is the Government Increasing Passport Fees?

Set to announce the Federal Budget 2024 on Tuesday, the government aims to address the cost-of-living crisis impacting many Australians. Treasurer Jim Chalmers explained the fee changes:

“This one-off increase is all about making sure that we can resource our passport systems and make them modern and fit for purpose… especially at a time where there are ongoing threats to people’s security and their identity,”

The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook for 2023-24 anticipates that the measure will generate $349 million over three years starting from 2024-25. This revenue will support priorities in the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio.

How Is Inflation Affecting Australians’ Travel Plans?

Rising costs are putting a squeeze on Australians’ travel budgets. Despite this, a Finder survey revealed that 15% of respondents—equivalent to three million people—booked holidays they couldn’t afford in the last year. This included:

  • 7% borrowing money from family or friends
  • 4% cancelling their trips
  • Over 800,000 people going into debt to finance their holidays

Hunter pointed out that passport fees are only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to rising travel costs:

“There are several factors driving up flight costs. Pent-up demand for travel means airlines can get away with charging more,” he said. “Airlines are also experiencing staffing shortages after dismissing thousands of crew during the pandemic. Increasing costs for fuel are a factor too, and the general rise in cost of living also increases airline input costs for in-flight food.”

As the cost of living rises, more Australians are cutting back on holiday spending. Hunter noted,

“Travel is a luxury many cannot justify right now. With rising interest rates and the steep cost of necessities such as food and fuel, discretionary spending inevitably takes a back seat. If travelling is a priority for you, make it an item in your budget and save for it.”

Can Planning Ahead Save You Money?

Given the upcoming passport price increase, those planning international travel should consider renewing their passports before July 1. This step can save you $50, which might be better used for other travel expenses.

Renewing now not only saves you money but also ensures that your travel plans won’t be disrupted by passport processing delays, especially during peak times.
