🩺 Basic Health Information for Travelers to Venezuela

  • Malaria and Dengue Fever are quite common to the region and will require vaccinations against. Travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid Malaria infection including covering up the skin and buying plenty of insect repellent.
  • Rabies, Yellow Feve and Cholera are present in the country, routine vaccinations against should be obtained prior to visiting the country. Travellers should exercise normal procedures when dealing with needles or when engaging in sexual intercourse.
  • A yellow fever vaccination is required for this country.
  • All water should be well boiled before drinking. Bottled water is preferable and should be taken in great quantities. Meat, fish and vegetables should be very well cooked before eating. Milk should be pasteurized or boiled before drunk. All ice and dairy products should also be avoided for fear of contagion.
  • Medical facilities are reasonable hospitals available in Venezuela. In large cities, private clinics provide good quality care for routine treatments.
  • All travellers should seek medical advice before travelling to the country and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up to date.

🛡 Basic Security Information for Travelers to Venezuela

  • General street crime is a big danger in Venezuela, especially in the major cities and on beaches, including on the popular tourist island of Margarita and travellers should keep their valuables in a safe place at all times. Kidnapping of foreigners for ransom has occurred in the country and travellers should avoid travelling alone throughout the country in general and particularly after dark.
  • Drug trafficking is a serious problem for Venezuela’s authorities and will lead to tough sentences for any travellers caught dealing in or transporting illegal substances. Local prison conditions are very likely to be basic and unhygienic and all travellers should take great care to avoid participation in any illegal activity which could bring them into conflict with the countries police force.
  • There is an underlying greater than average threat from international terrorism inside this country. Multiple threats have been made against Western military and business interests throughout the country and all travellers to the region should stay alert when visiting all tourist or business locations.
  • British Foreign and Common-wealth Office advise to against all travel to within 80 kms (50 miles) of the Colombian border in the states of Zulia, Tachire and Apure.
  • All travellers should take care in the rest of Apure state and we advise those visiting the area, including the tourist area of Los Llanos, to do so as part of an organised tour.
