🩺 Basic Health Information for Travelers to Senegal

  • Health facilities in Dakar are reasonable but are limited in the rest of Senegal.
  • Malaria and other tropical diseases are common in Senegal, especially during the rainy season (July-October).
  • Due to occasional outbreaks of cholera, travellers should drink or use only boiled or bottled water and avoid ice in drinks. If you suffer from diarrhoea during a visit to Senegal you should seek immediate medical attention.
  • All travellers should seek medical advice before travelling to the country and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up to date.

🛡 Basic Security Information for Travelers to Senegal

  • Pick pocketing and street crime are common in many of the main cities inside the country, particularly in parts of Dakar, around Place de l'Independence, the central area of the Plateau, the Western Corniche, and the airport. All travellers should keep their passport and other valuables in a safe and secure location and avoid any obvious displays of affluence which could serve to attract unwanted attention. Passports and other vital documents should be photocopied prior to your arrival in the event of an accident or emergency. All travellers should also avoid any areas of high poverty and keep to well lit public areas after dark.
  • The Casamance region of south-western Senegal (between the southern border of Gambia and the northern border of Guinea-Bissau) remains affected by incidents involving armed separatist groups and by incidents of banditry, particularly though not exclusively in the regions of Bignona and Sindian.
