🩺 Basic Health Information for Travelers to Chad

  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for any tourists planning to visit the country.
  • Native water will need to be boiled thoroughly before drunk. Travellers should stick to bottled water wherever possible. Swimming or paddling in untreated water is not advised.
  • All meat and vegetables should be thoroughly cooked prior to eating. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled. All dairy products should be avoided where possible. Powdered or tinned milk is available and is advised.
  • Malaria is present in certain areas of the country and visitors should take all precautions required to prevent infection. Early symptoms of the disease include headaches, fever, chills, fatigue and nausea. Visitors should avoid wearing clothes that leave the skin exposed and to apply large sums of insect repellent where needed. If infected, waste no time in seeking medical assistance before the symptoms increase.
  • Before travelling to the country, visitors should seek vaccinations against Polio, Hepatitis A and E, Onchocerciasis (river blindness), tuberculosis and dengue.
  • HIV and aids are both prevalent health threats in this country and travellers should take care if engaging in any form of sexual intercourse or when dealing with needles.
  • Rabies carried by bats and potentially other wild animals also exists as a health risk. Visitors should stay away from any wild animals or natural cave systems which may attract the infected creature’s attentions. If infected, the wound should be washed thoroughly with clean water and medical aid should be obtained to check for signs of infection.
  • Visitors should be wary of the countries natural hot and arid conditions and take steps to stay healthy and hydrated such as wearing a hat and drinking plenty of bottled water.
  • Medical care and standards should be considered poor in the country and health insurance is strongly advised prior to flight.

  • Levels of dangerous violence against foreigners is high in Chad and travellers are strongly advised to take care when visiting the country. Acts of violence include armed robbery, kidnapping and rape. Travellers should stick to the major cities, avoid travelling alone after dark and to keep their valuables stored in a safe location at all times.
  • Visitors should avoid travelling close to the country’s borders with neighbouring countries including Libya, Sudan and the Central African Republic. Tensions remain high between the various border countries and violence could erupt at any time. Additional violence between the government and local rebel forces is also a recurring issue and travellers should examine the current social and political climate prior to flight.
  • Any travel outside the capital of N'Djamena will require a travel permit issued by the Ministry of Interior.
  • Photos of important police, military and government installations are forbidden and could be taken by the security services. Travellers should keep a copy of their passport with them at all times.
  • Travellers should exercise caution when discussing sensitive political or religious issues which can lead to violence.
  • Visitors should dress appropriately for the countries intense heat but without risking the various insect based diseases prevalent in the country.
