🩺 Basic Health Information for Travelers to Burundi

  • A yellow fever vaccination is required for all visitors to Burundi. The disease is endemic and affects all regions.
  • Local water should be regarded as being contaminated and should be thoroughly boiled before drinking. Travellers are advised to stick to bottled water where possible and avoid milk and dairy based products. Local fish, meat, poultry and vegetables should be well cooked and served boiling hot for safety reasons and items of fruit peeled. Food and drink served from vendors is not recommended.
  • Malaria is present in much of the country. Travellers should take precautions to avoid infection by taking along plenty of repellent and wearing clothes which reveal little skin. Symptoms of the disease include headaches, fevers, sweats, and fatigue. Travellers should see a doctor immediately if symptoms become apparent.
  • Rabies is also present in this country and any tourist bitten by any wild animals in the country should clean and examine the wound and seek medical attention immediately.
  • Medical facilities in the country are currently considered quite poor. Visitors are advised to be extra careful when visiting the country and to ensure that they are well protected from the various diseases which are currently endemic to the region. All travellers to the country should make sure that they possess up to date health insurance prior to flight.

  • Owing to recent hostilities between the government and rebel forces, tourists should be extra wary of the country’s political climate and to plan their holiday accordingly. The country is also in a state of conflict with neighbouring Kingdom Of Congo and travellers are strongly advised to stay away from the volatile region unless absolutely necessary.
  • Crimes including violent mugging, burglaries and carjacking are common. Visitors are urged to keep all their belongings in a safe place and to not travel alone after dark.
  • Photos of military and government facilities are not advised. Earthquakes are a potential danger throughout the country.
  • Homosexuality is illegal in this country and all travellers are strongly urged to avoid any overt displays of affection which could potentially lead to trouble.
