  • Firearms and ammunition may only be imported into Botswana upon production of a Police permit issued by the Central Arms Registry. The importation of firearms, which do not have the manufacture’s serial number or other number by which they can be identified, stamped or engraved on a metal part of the weapon, is totally prohibited.
  • No boat, mokoro or aquatic apparatus may be imported into Botswana unless the owner is in possession of an Import Permit issued by Department of Water Affairs.
  • All plants, seeds and other plant products being imported into the country will require permission from the Chief Agricultural Research Officer.
  • Importation and exportation of wild animals or their products (trophy or meat) is prohibited unless accompanied by an export permit issued by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
  • Cats, dogs and other animals being imported into the country will need an Animal Health Certificate issued by the Director of Animal Health and Production and a Rabies vaccination certificate.

🩺 Basic Health Information for Travelers to Botswana

  • A yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from or through a country suffering from the disease.
  • Protection against Malaria is highly recommended for all travellers choosing to visit this country. The disease is spread via the bites from mosquitoes and cases usually increase during or just after the rainy season from October to April although the disease is present at other times throughout the year. Malaria is moderately endemic in northern areas, including the Boteti, Chobe, Ngamiland, Okavango, and Tutume regions and to a lesser degree along the south east border with South Africa. The city of Gaborone is essentially free of the disease but rare cases can still occur. All visitors to the country are strongly advised to wear plenty of close fitting clothing that exposes little in the way of open skin and should obtain plenty of insect repellent for defence. Emergency medical assistance should be immediately sought if infected.
  • Hepatitis B is endemic to the entire region and any foreign travellers dealing with bloody or infected needles should exercise extreme caution at all times to prevent any possibility of infection. Travellers engaging in sexual activity throughout their visit are likewise cautioned to take care in preventing any possible risk of infection.

  • Carjacking is common in some parts of the country and all travellers should also take care to keep their car safe and secure at all times throughout their visit. Obstructions and heavy rain may leave some roads impassable or dangerous with little warning and all visitors should exercise great caution if driving throughout the region during periods of heavy rain or political uncertainty.
  • Penalties for drug related offenses are server and often include mandatory prison sentences. Photos of important military or government installation are prohibited and can be removed or destroyed without warning by the security services. Photos of everyday people should only be taken with their permission in order to prevent any scenes of confusion.
  • Homosexuality is illegal in this country and all same sex couples are strongly urged to avoid any public displays of affection which could potentially attract unwanted or even hostile attention.
